Many users focus heavily on accuracy and speed indicators during instrument selection. However, physical hardware details of the instrument, test tube accessories, power supply, overall dimensions and weight are directly related to laboratory bench layout, supporting consumable procurement and instrument installation requirements. The three versions of the CHNSpec DS-P900T series automatic high-speed polarimeter share the same instrument overall dimensions of 774mm × 326mm × 229mm and a net weight of 18.95kg, with a power supply specification of 220V±22V, 50Hz±1Hz, 250W; the difference between versions lies in the configuration of test tube accessories.

With an overall weight close to 19kg, the instrument is a bench-top analytical device and must be placed on a stable and level laboratory bench. As an optical instrument, the polarimeter should be installed away from strong vibration sources and not placed beside centrifuges or stirring equipment. Vibration will disturb the internal optical path and cause reading fluctuations. Direct sunlight on the sample compartment of the instrument should also be avoided, as intense direct light interferes with the photodetector signal and leads to measurement drift. Ambient humidity must be kept within the allowable range of the instrument to prevent moisture damage to optical lenses. The instrument is nearly 77 centimeters in length. Sufficient lateral space must be reserved during placement for easy access to polarimeter test tubes, and clearance should be reserved for ports to facilitate the arrangement of USB cables, network cables and WiFi antennas. Do not place the instrument tightly against the wall.

The instrument operates on 220V mains power with a power rating of 250W. It is recommended to use an independently and well-grounded power socket. If the laboratory experiences severe voltage fluctuations, a regulated power supply may be considered. Significant voltage fluctuations will indirectly affect the stability of light source output. Although the instrument power consumption is relatively low, sharing the same power strip with high-power stirring or high-temperature heating equipment is not advised to avoid voltage disturbances.

In terms of test tube accessories, the entry-level model is equipped with 100mm and 200mm standard test tubes. In addition to standard test tubes, the mid-range and high-end models are further supplied with 100mm temperature-controlled test tubes. The optical path length of the polarimeter tube is directly involved in the calculation of specific rotation and concentration. 100mm (1 dm) is the commonly used optical path length specified in pharmacopoeias, while 200mm (2 dm) is suitable for samples with weak optical activity and small optical rotation values. The extended optical path amplifies the rotation angle and improves signal level. Temperature-controlled test tubes work together with the built-in temperature control module of the instrument. The tube wall is equipped with a temperature exchange structure to realize sample temperature control; standard test tubes do not support temperature control functions.

Daily maintenance of test tubes also affects test quality. Avoid generating air bubbles when filling samples, as bubbles will block the optical path. Do not touch the optical windows at both ends of the test tubes directly with hands, since grease from fingers will contaminate the lenses and reduce light transmittance. Clean the test tubes promptly after testing to prevent sample crystallization and residue adhesion on the windows. In the same laboratory, test tubes of different optical path lengths shall be clearly marked. During measurement, the tube length parameter set in the instrument must match the actual test tube in use. Incorrect tube length settings will result in proportional deviations in calculated specific rotation and concentration values.

Test tube consumables are easily overlooked in many laboratories. Polarimeter tubes are consumable accessories; their windows will wear after long-term use. Regular verification of the working status of the complete instrument-tube system should be carried out by combining standard quartz tubes with multi-point automatic calibration of the instrument.

The three versions have identical appearance, weight and power parameters. Therefore, there is no need to differentiate between versions when reserving bench space in the early laboratory planning stage; reserve the bench surface according to this set of dimensions. The key confirmation point during purchasing is the test tube configuration: the entry-level version with standard test tubes is sufficient if temperature control is not required; select the mid-range or high-end version with supporting temperature-controlled test tubes if temperature-controlled testing is needed.

Although hardware details do not attract as much attention as accuracy indicators, installation conditions and consumable accessories directly affect the long-term stable operation of the instrument. Proper bench planning in the preliminary stage and correct selection and maintenance of polarimeter test tubes are essential to give full play to the detection performance of the instrument.
