Colorimeters vs. Spectrophotometers Which is better?

In everyday life, there exists a wide variety of colors that play a very important role. However, unlike length or weight, color is subjective, so when asked to describe the same object, people are unlikely to respond in the same way. For example, if we say “red car"or"red apple"to people, they will imagine different shades of red because their perception of color is different from their past experiences. This is the main problem with color, but modern advances in science and technology have helped solve this problem. With the introduction of color measuring instruments such as colorimeters and spectrophotometers, we are able to quantify color. These technologically advanced instruments are able to assign numerical values that help quantify, control and define color. This blog will help explain the difference between a colorimeter and a spectrophotometer, both of which are the most commonly used color measurement instruments.

A colorimeter is a precision color measurement instrument that makes “triadic” color measurements based on the passage of light through red, green, and blue primary color filters. Triple primary color modulus color measurement provides data on the content of these three components in the reflected or transmitted light of a product. This data can be used to adjust the color composition or to determine if the color of a manufactured product meets a standard or reference.

Triple colorimeters are relatively inexpensive, compact, mobile and easy to operate. Colorimeters allow easy determination of chromaticity values under a single light source and are mainly used for reflectance measurements. However, colorimeters are not suitable for complex color analyses such as color deviation, colorant strength, or recipe formulation.

Spectrophotometers are the most precise, accurate and sophisticated color measurement instruments for color quality control and color formulation. Spectrophotometers are available in benchtop models for quality control and research laboratories, as well as portable models for factory or field work. Spectrophotometers are capable of full-spectrum color measurement. Spectrophotometers measure the spectral reflectance or transmittance of objects in the visible wavelength range of 400 mm to 700 mm. The greater specificity of spectrophotometers makes them the instrument of choice for color formulation, standards and tolerance specifications, inter-plant color communication and color quality control.

Spectrophotometers are more accurate and more versatile. It is suitable for more complex color analysis because it can determine the spectral reflectance at each wavelength. However, spectrophotometers can be more expensive than colorimeters. Be sure to consider the measurement accuracy of each color before choosing the type of instrument to use in a particular application.
